Large streaming platforms like Netflix said that out of
their 220 million subscribers 70% watch documentaries this is because the
documentaries are often always available and easy to access. Smaller platforms
like YouTube have also made documentaries more accessible for the creators and
viewers as short form content has become more popular in most recent years. Around
40% of the uk report watching more documentaries in the last 12 moths than
previous years. 44% of the uk viewers stream documentaries than other forms of
entertainment. Some of the top genres of documentaries are crime and justice
taking up 28% of viewers closely followed by history with 27% and then science
and nature taking 25%. Documentaries target all ages and genders but is often
favoured by the older generation as they often relate with more of the content
as they have either lived through the event or enjoy long form content.
Documentaries also have an impact on the people watching them as 1 in 10 brits
say that watching true crime inspired then to join the police force.
